Observer of life - DAY 791

The strength of his brush dipped in oils etches the silhhouettes of veicle traffic, bridges, carts; hawkers including Mumbai’s dabbawalas. Wet streets , cloudy skyline, crammed by lanes and people rushing is what makes Mumbai the city it is.

As the clouds gather in the sky during the monsoons Mumbai turns gloomy and those traveling home , after a hard day’s work are prepared that it will be a long journey before they can be over the bridge.

Artist who walks - DAY 790

Karambele is a keen observer of metropolis and says he is able to do this effectively because he enjoys walking and spends all his time on the streets discovering life.

In the olden days women of the house went to showrooms to buy jewellery today they do window shopping sitting in their car as the dabbawala who is the heart beat of the city goes about his work unconcerned of what is happening around him.

Rocky Handsome is far from rocking or handsome

John Abraham produced aur Nishikant Kamath directed Rocky Handsome wohi drug mafia aur crime world ki kahani hai.
Iss baar baat sirf cocaine ki nahi balke bache aur baddon ke body organs ke vyapar ki hain…
Goa ki ek andheri gali mein, ek benaam hero, jisse sab Handsome pukarte hain, uss ilake ka sahukaar hai, jiske paas sab zarurat ke samay apni keemti vastu girvi rakhkar, paisa uthate hai.
Unme se ek grahak hai Handsome ka neighbour Anna aur uski aath/8 saal ki beti Naomi.

Rocky Handsome Korean film Man from No where ki copy hai aur aisa ek bhi scene nahi jahan koi hathyaar istamaal na hua ho.
Har scene mein kissi na kissi par atyachar ho raha hai. Film behad dark hai, behad depressing hai aur bina matlab ke mindlessly violent hai…
Burri se burri film mein, kuch toh acha hota hai, magar Rocky Handsome mein itna andhera hai ki John Abraham bhi achcha nahi lagta…

Rocky Handsome ko Big Entertainment Ratings milte hain 1 star.

Writers’ Bloc - DAY 786

We live in turbulent times. The Indian playwright - and Indian playwriting - in general is truly in danger of extinction; young writers, tempted by the lucre of television and the lure of cinema, are evading theatre altogether. The few that have stuck to their passion are continually concerned that their plays will die unperformed on dusty bookshelves. So how do young playwrights survive and keep their focus? What impels them to keep honing their drafts and continue working on characters? How do they keep their stories, let alone their dreams, alive?

Rage watches over the journeys of young playwright with concern and provides a platform to support their dream. Writers’ Bloc was conceived as a unique initiative to train and discover exciting new playwrights to Indian audiences and is collaboration between the British Council, JSW and Rage. The process was simple. A question was asked, Can you write drama? The answer was a resounding ‘yes’! The next step was to ask writers to send us their plays – full length, one act- or even a scene.  The first time they tried it was in 2004, then 2007 then 2012 and now the stage is set for Writers Bloc 4 and the year is 2016.
Every time, scripts poured in from all over India in all languages - English, Hindi, Marathi, etc. which were short listed to twelve of the most promising writers.  Once this is done, the writers are invited to the idyllic Jindal guesthouse in remote Vasind, for a series of workshops to interact with some of the finest theatre professionals from the Royal Court – April de Angelis, Carl Miller, Elyse Dodgson, Phyllida Lloyd, Ramin Gray, Richard Twyman and Vivienne Franzmann.

The participants get an opportunity to nourish their ideas into a full length scripts over the span of a year, resulting in a festival of the performance of all the plays. Writers’ Bloc has since  2002 introduced 54 playwrights and 40 new scripts, including three more chosen for the book and staged by various theatre groups and institutions in India and abroad.

Loretta comes to town - DAY 780

Sunil Shanbag’s Arpana Theatre is bringing to life tiatr — a form of musical theatre that finds its roots in Goa — with its brand new production Loretta set in the 70s on a river island in Goa.  About a widower Antonio Piedade Moraes, a bhatkaar (landlord), lives a rather comfortable life in his resplendent home, with much help from a lot of locals. Surrounded by bakers, gardeners, a Man Friday and a whole lot of others, Antonio, a great votary of the Konkani language, is rather protective of his island.

Sunil Shanbag says Loretta is inspired by tiatr and will see familial and social issues being dealt with in a manner that’s typical of the genre. Among the unique characteristics of the genre are the side shows. Typical of the theatre form, these shows happen at the front portion of the stage, traditionally giving those backstage some extra time to change props and backdrops. They provide a good measure of satire, something Shanbag intends to bank on while also recreating the ambience of a bygone era through its music. Even as they serve as a distraction for the audience, these shows often tackle important social issues in a thought-provoking, satirical manner.

DAY 774 - Jai Gangajal belongs to Priyanka

Prakash Jha likhi directed Jai Gangajal unhi ke banner ki saal 2003 ki Gangajal ka sequel hai. Gangajal mein SP Amit Kumar, yaane Ajay Devgan, Bihar ke Tezpur disctrict mein appoint hote hain aur wahan ke gundo ko eint ka jawab pathar mein dekar logon ko rahat dilate hain.  Jai Gangajal mein SP Aabha Mathur, yaane Priyanka Chopra, Bihar ke Bankipur zilla ki pehli mahila officer hain jo Bankipur aur Lakhisarai zille ke neta aur goondo ko nidar hokar, muh tod jawab deti hain. Film ki kahani wohi – police/politician ka nexus hain, jahan Gangajal  mein villains’ baap bete thhe, iss baar khalnayak do bhai, yaane Manav Kaul aur Rahul Bhatt hain. Prakash Jha ki baaki filmon ki tarha, iss baar bhi, hum Bihar ki rajneeti hum shehar ki beech sadak anubhav karte hain. Zilla ke neta bheed ko cheerte hue aam aadmi par kabhi bhi, kahin bhi laathiyaan aur goliyaan barsate hain! Film ka plus: film ka music, engaging narrative aur dialogues, film bahtareen likhi or darshayi ki gayi hai. Film ka minus: Plot predictible hai aur background score bina wajeh shor machata hai. Film excessively violent hai har ek hadh ke baad asahay ban jaati hai…

Film ka surprise, film ke writer/director Prakash Jha actor ke avtaar mein… Jha ki dialogue delivery impressive hai bas thodi camera se dosti karni baaki hai... Film ki shaan Priyanka Chopra hai – jo apne kirdaar ko na sirf action scenes mein, magar police station aur court kacheri ke bahar bhi saath lekar chalti hai. Ek scene mein wo apne dushman ko maarte hue kehti hain, ‘Vardi aurat mard ka antar nahi karti’ aur ye saabit karti hai! Jai Gangajal dekhni chaiye, film ke nek sandesh ke liye: ke shaalat chahe kitne bhi badtar kyon na ho jayein, samaaj mein sab se taqatwar hota hai aam aadmi aur usse bhi badhkar, uska zameer!

Jai Gangajal ko Big Entertainment Ratings milte hai 3 stars.
