Cutting Chai with Bhawana Somaaya - Day 195

Talking Cinema iii

19.9.2013, Mumbai

Tabu shared about how she lost and found Ashima Ganguly in her first international film Namesake with Mira Nair.
Kiron Kher spoke about shooting Khamosh Pani during troubled times in Pakistan, Guddi Jaya Bachchan was facing the camera after decades in Hazar Chaurasi ki Maa and identified with her character Sujata. Shabana Azmi discussed the dividing line between the actor and the activist and also because nobody speaks as passionately about acting as she does. Azmi said India cinema will change in the 21st century and it did.

Rekha was enacting her first deglamourized role as the midwife and mother in Lajja and even though pushing 50 at that time, she remained the first choice of filmmakers casting for the role of a courtesan as in Yatra.

I was privileged to spend quality time with all generations of directors. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s last interview post Jooth Bole Kauwa Kaate and Yash Chopra’s last interview post Veer Zaara. I didn’t know at that time that Hu Tu Tu would be curtain call for Gulzar as a director and he would rise to dizzy heights as India’s prime lyricist.

The new breed of directors like Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali were then young and restless. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for Karan and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam for Sanjay had raised the bar and both were anguished to live up to the high expectations from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Devdas.
