On his 71st Birthday, Amitabh Bachchan announced a charitable initiative named after his father Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan Memorial Trust and Urja Foundation to provide solar powered lights to around 3000 homes all across India (28 states). The objective is to provide feasible and sustainable renewable energy solutions for inclusive growth to those millions who have no access to electricity but since our country is blessed with abundant sunlight projects like Urjala are possible.

Urja Foundation and Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan Memorial Trust will embark on a journey to light up rural homes using environmentally friendly solar home lighting systems. This initiative is being supported by the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC) and has Blue Dart as the official supply partner ensuring efficiently in logistics by delivering the solar home lighting systems across rural India.
The solar home lighting systems (SHS) will be provided free of cost to all identified beneficiaries and this is been initiated on the auspicious day of Bachchan’s birthday this year. The Solar Home Lighting System (SHS) will power 2 lights, 1 portable light and mobile charger. With the growing energy needs of our country renewable energy resources will play an important role in future and the solar home light system installed will be a step ahead to providing the basic necessity of clean and green energy.
And when that happens we will remember the actor who made it possible before time.
