Cutting Chai with Bhawana Somaaya - Day 331

Jai Ho Gulzar
23.04.14

Finally, all speculations come to an end as poet and lyricist Gulzar is announced as the Dadasaheb Phalke winner of the year 2014. 79 year old Sampoorna Singh Kalra was born in 1934 Punjab and came to Mumbai to become a writer. He worked temporarily in a motor garage till he was picked up by a writer friend and introduced to the right people, which was in a way the start of a creative and an eventful career. Nurtured by Bimal Roy, SDBurman, Madan Mohan, Salil Choudhary, his first song as a lyricist was ‘Mora gora aang lai le…’/Bandini. There was no looking back since then as he blossomed from a song writer to dialogues, screenplay and then a filmmaker. Few people know that he is a painter and an author of innumerable poetry and other story books. After Hu Tu Tu Gulzar concentrated only on lyrics and remain the busiest and the highest paid song writer in film fraternity today.
His award is a moment of pride not just for him and his family but the entire country. Yehi hai right choice I &B Ministy...
