Turning Points

Do turning points alter our destiny….? Or does our destiny lead us to these turning points…? The topic is debatable. One thing is for certain though that there is a mightier force guiding all of us. I have never stopped to ponder over the impact of certain events in my life, but now that I do, it’s also time to acknowledge people who made the difference….!

Scene: 1 Tribute: 1
My mother was 45 when she conceived me. The doctors were concerned for her health. It is said that the nurse who delivered me was hesitant to break the news to my aged father waiting on a bench all night. She had come to know that I was the sixth daughter and the eighth child of my middle class parents and she assumed that the news would break my father’s heart.

She was wrong. My father, on hearing the news, extracted a five-rupee note from his pocket and said, “Our walking stick has arrived. …We are going to have a companion in our old age…” My father depicted rare courage though deep down I’m sure both my parents felt concerned about my future.

When I grew up my older siblings recounted many stories of my childhood, some cheerful and some not so pleasant but strangely I was never filled with sadness. It can be because they narrated these stories with immense humour and affection.

Time alters perspective and wisdom turns you philosophic. In my quiet moments I have often wondered that would have happened if my mother had not been able to sustain me in her womb many years ago…? Chances are that I would have settled for another womb, found another home and perhaps another destiny…! There is no guarantee that I would have been happier or even healthier. One thing is for certain. I would have been deprived of the opportunity of being my parents’ child!

So thank you Ba and Bapujee for having me. For not being bogged down by societal pressures.

Scene: 2 Tribute: 2
I was 20 and raring to go. I had stars in my eyes and wings that would not fold. When I look back on it now, it seems like a scene from a film and in many ways it was.

The morning newspaper invited college students with a flair for writing for a walk-in interview. In response I landed in Bombay’s premier Taj Mahal Hotel to try my luck. As I stood facing a panel of stern looking judges, I shuddered to think what my parents would say about my adventure. The interview lasted some ten long minutes. I was asked the craziest questions after which I discovered to my horror that I was confirmed for the job as a film journalist.

“But I don’t want to be a film journalist,” I told the eminent members on the panel. There was an awkward silence and then a veteran thundered, “Then why the hell are you wasting everybody’s time here…?” I had no answer and quietly left the room.

There is no logical explanation for why I changed my mind and despite a degree in Law opted to become a film journalist after all. There is no explaining why I sustained in this high strung profession for 30 long years and enjoyed it.

Today there is no doubt in my mind that it is the right choice for me. But could this have occurred had I not courted a mid-summer adventure many summers ago…? It is because I was bold enough to speak my mind…to follow my heart that I was able to pursue my dream…It is not easy surviving show business!

Thank you jury for challenging me... It’s because of you that I was motivated and I am where I am.

Scene: 3  Tribute: 3
Over the years, there were many happy and sad moments in my personal life and career. Some of these memories linger even now… The first time I bought a sari with my hard earned money… The first time I purchased my diamonds… The first time I bought a car… My first apartment… The first time I turned an editor… The first time I turned an author…

Some revive old wounds… The dreadful night when I lost my father… Ever since, I have been filled with fear of darkness! My mother understood this and when it was time for her to say good-bye, she chose to exit at dawn. She had faith that her daughter will rise above the suffering and she was not wrong. Before she departed, she prepared me to absorb all experiences that come my way positively.

They say time is a great healer and it is perhaps the blessings of the deceased that I can look back on my caravan of life with gratitude and wonderment. Everyone who touched my life had a message to impart.

A few years ago, my loyal maid of many years lost her husband and she was devastated. When I saw her crying beside the dead body I was sure life would never be the same for her. But a month later, tugging her six-month old baby at her waist, she was back to the job. “Of course I miss him and feel his presence all the time,” she said to me with tears in her eyes, “But life has to go on. …”

How right she was. Life goes on and we fall into what is laid for us. In our happier moments we think we make the choices when in reality the turning points we encounter are all predestined…

Thank you life for being the greatest teacher...

Story to remember...

Namaskar - Cinema Review mein - main Bhawana Somaaya - aapka swagat karti hoon…

Iss hafte do releases hain - ek thriller Kahaani aur doosri romantic comedy Chaar Din Ki
Chandani.

Pehle baat karte hai Chaar Din Ki Chandani ki - Producer director Samir Karnik ne peechle saal - 3 Deols ki  - Yamla Pagla Deewana di thi.

Iss baar Samir Karnik 2 Singh pariwar ki kahani laaye hai.

Pehla Singh - Rajasthan wala - jahan Anupam Kher ka rajwada hai aur wo apne aapko His Highess kehte hai.

Doosra Singh - sardaron wala - jahan Om Puri Amritsar mein baste hai - aur baaki Punjabiyon ki tarha gaaliyon ke bagair baat nahi karte.

Aur ye dono Singh ko milate hai unke hi bachche - yaane Tusshar Kapoor aur Kulraj Randhawa.

Tusshar London se Rajasthan apni eklauti behan ki shaadi ke liye aata hai…

Aur kyon ki Kulraj ne aaj tak - koi royal wedding nahi dekhi hai - wo bhi Tusshar ke
saath saath Rajasthan aati hai.

Film iss char din ki chandani ki kahani hai…

Film ka first half - mele ke giant wheel ki tarha - bohat fast aur entertaining hai aur interval tak aap has haskar pagal ho jaoge.

Post interval - film mein drop aata hai - magar Sandesh Shandaliya ka music, Bosco Ceasar ki choreography aur film ka climax - aapko jakkadkar rakhte hai.

Chaar Din Ki Chandani routine comedy se hatkar - class, caste jaise samajik muddon par
vivaad karti hai- wo bhi bhashan ki tarha nahi - film ke sur mein!

Film ki likhawat - saare performances -Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Anita Raaj in a come back appearance, Tusshar Kapoor aur Kulraj Randhawa - hilarious hai.

Film mein Yash Raj Films ki Chandani ka titletrack istimaal kiya gaya hai -

Aur Kulraj - nayi adakara hote hue - Sridevi ke taqqar mein naachi hai.

Itna hi nahi - climax mein - Seeta aur Geeta ki Hema Malini ki tarha - Kulraj ne action
sequences bhi kiyye hai.

1960 mein ek film bani thi Ek Phool Chaar Kaante -jismein - Sunil Dutt Waheeda Rehman ko paane ke liye - unke chachaon ke dil jeetne padte hai.

Ismein - Tusshar Kapoor ke chaar bhai hai - Kulraj ko - Tusshar ko pane ke pehle - charon se sambhal ke rehna padta hai.

Chaar Din Ki Chandani ko milte hai 3 stars.

******************************************************************

Ab baat karte hai - doosri film - yaane Viacom 18 produced aur Sujoy Ghosh directed Kahaani ki.

Ek pregnant aurat - Kolkatta Airport se bahar nikalti hai...

Ek haath mein paani ki bottle - doosra haath trolley ko khichte hue - wo taxi rokti hai!

Taxi driver hairan hai kyon ki usually log - airport se seedha hotel - ya ghar jaate hai…

Magar ye passenger - directly police station jaati hai. Usse complain likhwani hai - apne lapatta pati ki.

Naam -Vidya Bagchi.

Profession -softwear engineer.

Rahne ka shehar - London.

Kolkatta aane ki wajah - pati Arnab Bagchi ki talash.

Details - Arnab assignment ke liye Kolkatta aaye the - Kuch hafte regular contact mein
rehne ke baad - wo achanak gayab ho jate hain.!

Ab Vidya wo saari jagah - aur logon se milna chahti hai - jisse Arnab ka wasta tha.

Isliyye Police Station se Guest House - jahan wo thehre the... National Data Centre -
Jahan wo kaam karte the… Arnab ke door ke Kaku ke ghar aur bharose mand khabbri…

Magar kahin se - Arnab ki koi khabar nahi - koi record nahi!

Film ka premise interesting hai - phir bhi - ek hadh ke baad - protagonist ka mission -
aur state of mind - repetitive ho jaata hai !

Kuch sawalon ke jawab nahi milte...Aur kuch gutti nahi sulajhti...

Mere hisab se film ka asli hero - film ke technicians' hai…

Sabse pehle cameraman Setu - jinhone humme Bengal ki khushbu aur mitti ka parichay
karwaya…

Jiss expertise se unhone Gawhati ki tang sadkein - aur Kolkatta ki bheed bharri
gulliyon - ke beech film ko shoot kiya hai wo qabile taarif hai !

Zyadatar outdoor shoots hai - aur wo bhi public places mein - jaise market - metro -
tram depot - puja pandaal - aur yehi film ki highlight hai!

Iske alava - film ka art direction - action - background score - Amitabh Bachchan ka voice over - song rendition 'Ekla chalo re…..' Chotte se chotte kirdar ka performance spectacular hai!

Parineeta se Dirty Picture - ke lambe safar ke baad - Vidya Balan - Maa Durga ki
tarha aati hai - barasti hai - aur karya samapt hone par - chali jaati hai !

Aisi mushqil film sochneke liye aur banana ke liye - main producer Jayantilal Gadha - aur writer director

Sujoy Ghosh ko main salaam karti hoon.
Kahaani ko milte hai 3.5 stars

Once upon a HOLI....

The story behind the holi festival is as old as our mythologies. When son Prahlad couldn’t be destroyed after every attempt of King Hiranyakashapu, Prahlad’s aunt and the king’s sister Holika blessed to immortality, offered to sit on the pyre with her nephew on her lap. Holika was certain that the flames wouldn’t perish her. To everybody’s surprise she was reduced to ashes. “I had to take back my blessings,” proclaimed the Lord, “Because you misused my powers.

For centuries ever since, the festival is celebrated to mark the end of evil, while dhudeti, the ritual of spreading colour on the following day is a robust gesture to soothe the angry flames! It is believed that thedeities’ sprinkled kesuda (red flower) mixed with water to calm the ravage. Over the years, the royal families replaced the red leaf paste with red powder (gulal) and gradually holi came to be identified as anational festival of colour and cheer.

That it lent a secular message and was an occasion to drop inhibitions became a reason why film writers thrived on holi to evoke nostalgia. Time and again Hindi cinema thrived on the song-n-dance situation to project the merriment hasn’t diminished in all these years. What alters is the projection. So if Yash Chopra perceives it as an occasion for indulgence (Silsila) and later fear (Darr) for Subhash Ghai, it was a moment for confrontation (Hero) and later truce (Saudagar).

For Rajkumar Santoshi it was a reason for truant (Damini) and for Ramesh Sippy, a moment of celebration (Sholay). Combining the sad with the happy moments, when a younger Jaya Bhaduri chases Sanjeev Kumar’s tonga challenging to colour his spotless kurta and later, the same sequence with Jaya as a widow, watching the gaiety from a temple perched on the top of a hill, is heart rending. So is Mani Ratnam’s Dal-Pati telling the story of a 13-year-old suffering labour pangs. It breaks your heart to watch her abandon the baby on a moving train. For years after that, on every holi night, the guilt ridden mother is hounded by visions of the villagers prancing around the bonfire destroying old belongings. Her conscience continues to haunt her for 30 years, until she meets her neglected son and makes peace with him.

My earliest memory of the festival goes back to Mehboob Khan’s Mother India. The hero Raaj Kumar has mortgaged his wife’s bangle to the sahukarNext morning, on spotting the same bangle on the sahukar’s daughter, Birju is outraged, his fury the first flash of the Angry man roles to follow. On the other hand V Shantaram films preferred to emphasise on the fun and flirtation associated with the celebration. So Ari jaani natkhat, mat chuna mera ghunghat… picturised on dancer Gopi Krishna and Sandhya in Navrang, after all these years remain memorable for the erotic lyrics and unusual choreography.

There came a time when the festival became synonymous with romance on screen and it was impossible to imagine a Hindi film during the 60s and the 70s without a holi song. The audience was bored of the clichéd situations and those that dared to be different made a mark. On top of the list is Waheeda Rehman-Dharmendra starrer PhagunOn the holi day Waheeda’s father, a zamindar as per the tradition has presented his daughter a new saree. Her husband, in a romantic moment splashes her with colour and ruins her new saree. Torn between the two men she loves, Waheeda feels obliged to humiliate her husband in public to pacify her father. The husband is crestfallen and walks out on his pregnant wife to return 20 years later, imbalanced and diffident.

In Shyam Benegal’s Bhumika Naseeruddin Shah playing a filmmaker has everyone believe that he disapproves of the celebration because his daughter died on the occasion. Smita Patil, playing the actress defiantly applies a dash of colour on his cheeks. The gesture is the beginning of a tentative attraction between the two. Exploring unfamiliar nuances is also Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Alaap where in Rekhaunsure of reciprocation, hides behind the door waiting in anticipation. The hero follows her and colours her spontaneously, oblivious of her feelings for him. In complete contrast is ‘Rang Barse…’ in Silsila  where bhang becomes an excuse for the lovers to rekindle an old affair. The brazenness appeals to our basic instinct, evoking a heady feeling despite the social taboos.

The stigma of a widow participating in the festivities was first challenged by Shakti Samanta in Kati PatangRajesh Khanna applying the shagun ka tikka on the young widow’s forehead was a statement on our social customs. Ketan Mehta’s Holi about ragging in college campuses was a statement on our degrading education system. Reflecting the sinister side of hostel life, the film is the sad story of a young boy destroyed by peer pressure.

Blurb

The show goes on....

I recently attended a friend’s wedding where they deliberately put strangers on a common table together for dinner. In the beginning every one is awkward and uncomfortable but gradually as the evening progresses everyone dropped their guards and talked about themselves.

Two ladies at my table were house-wives and after going through their detailed time-table I repeat what I have always believed in-housewives in our country don’t work full time but overtime without a break.

There was a doctor who has now retired and spends his time reading newspapers and watching television. He said all these years when I was in practice nobody ever asked me how I was because they were so busy telling me what was ailing them. “Now for the first time everybody asks me how I’m doing and I just love the attention.”

There was a young girl who has just finished her MBA and is waiting for a job. “It is the worst time to have the degree” she explained to me, “Because everybody is an MBA and nobody has a job in this recession time.”

When I introduced myself I was asked a question I always dread to hear: ‘So how does it feel to be a film journalist…Do you believe in the people you write about?’

It’s a question I’m asked time and again by family and friends and it always feels strange to be answerable to them for the illusionary world I’m associated with. It feels strange to defend the dream merchants for whom I’m the outsider.

So when it comes to talking about me with strangers I’m self conscious and don’t reveal too much but they have questions and one common line repeatedly thrown at me is “But you don’t look like a film journalist.’ I have never understood the implication or maybe they expect me dress in ostrich feathers like Helen and perform an item number which I don’t.

It has to do with perceptions and if society holds an exaggerated image of the film fraternity then we as the media require doing some soul searching. There is a possibility that every time in our hurry to tell a story we have not been fair to our subjects. We have elaborated their quotes to spice up our copies and unknowingly tilted the balance.

Granted there is a dark side to the glamour world. In so many years of my career I have witnessed many moments where I’m left open-mouthed by the savagery of what I witness. But there is another side to show business too, the better side that only an insider can know. Cinema is perhaps the most sensitive medium where multiple talents come together There is creativity and compassion, warmth and wisdom that an outsider
will never know. Inaccessibility prevents identification.

Insecurity is an overwhelming emotion in any creative profession and in the film industry even more so. Film stars are peddlers of emotion. There are more emotional wrecks in the film world than in any other place. Every thing comes in excess here. There is shame and scandal, exhibitionism and eccentricity but there is also diversity and energy, a fatal attraction about the world of cinema that is obsessive.

Once you've been a part of it you feel incomplete without it.

Among the many reasons I continue to write books on show business is to present that other side of stardom. The side I have known and grown to love. The experiences have been an integral part of my growing up...It is watching their pain and passion that I have learnt many lessons of life. I have probed into the complex world of these beautiful people, exposed their insecurities and analyzed their contradictions.

When I wrote my first book Salaam Bollywood I worried endlessly if I had crossed the boundary line, revealed too much because I knew so much more. I was conscious of coming on strong on friends in my quest of being objective. There was a conflict between the journalist and the individual and I’m proud I didn’t let down either.

Today, when someone asks me the question, ‘How does it feel to be a film journalist’ I look at the person asking. I wonder if it is worth reacting...Strongly..? I’m not sure.

Paan Singh Tomar wins the race!!

Namaskar - Cinema Review mein - main Bhawana Somaaya - aapka swagat karti hoon…

Iss hafte chaar releases hain - Aur charon bilkul hi alag temperament aur genre ki hai.

Will You Marry Me aur Diary of a Butterfly independent productions hai - pehli comedy aur doosri social.

London Paris New York aur Paan Singh Tomar established production houses ki peshgi hai - pehli romance aur doosri drama...

****************************************************************

Pehle baat karte hai Will You Marry Me ki –

Writer Hyder Najmi aur director Aditya Datt ki ye film teen bachelors ki kahani hai.
Inmein se ek hai Rajeev Khandelval - jo pyaar se zyada paise ko ahmiyat deta hai.

Rajeev ke kehne par uske dost - ek kitty mein shamil hote hai…

Shart ye hai - ki unmein se jo aakhir mein single rahega - saare paise ussi ko milenge!

Kahani mein twist tab aata hai - jab unmein se ek dost ko pyaar ho jata hai - aur wo shaadi karne ki thaan leta hai.

Ab bachein - Rajeev Khandelval aur Shreyas Talpade - aur dono ko - ek hi ladki se pyaar hota hai.

Film single mindedly youth targeted hai - magar afsos ki - Shreyas Talpade aur Rajeev Khandelval jaise behtareen kalakar ke hote hue bhi - baat nahi banti.

Producer Krishan Chaudhery aur Vipin Jain ke sawaal - Will You Marry Me ka mera jawab hai – No, Never!!

Will You Marry Me ko milte hai 1.5 */ stars.

****************************************************************

Diary Of a Butterfly ek aur sitaron ki duniya ki kahani hai - jahan ek aur chotte shehar ki ladki - phir sapnon ki duniya - yaane Mumbai nagri aati hai - naam kamati hai - behakti hai - sambhalti hai - aur phir behakti hai.

Aisi kahaniyaan - humne bohat bade super stars ke saath - bohat baar dekhi hai…

Cinema hall jakar - Uddita Goswami - yaane Gul ki ye boring Diary dekhna - unbearable hai.

Diary of a Butterfly ko milta hai 1* star.

****************************************************************

Rose Movies ki - London Paris New York - teen shehar - 8 saal - aur ek jode ki kahani hai.

Lalitha aur Nikhil - London airport par milte hai - aur ajnabi hote hue - purra din London ki sadkon par - saath saath ghumte hai.

Phir Lalitha politics padhne New York chali jaati hai... aur Nikhil - wahin rehkar - filmmaking padhta hai.

Dono ek saal baad - New York mein milne ka wada karte hai - magar nahi milte!

Jab achanak milte hai - to jhagadte hai - aur ek doosre se door chale jaate hai.

Kuch saal baad - dono phirse milte hai - aur iss baar- wo purri raat - Paris ki sadkon par ghumte rehte hai.

Film 20s ke generation ko focus karti hai - jinhe apna career banana hai - aur sache pyaar ko bhi talshna hai.

Balke aisa lagta hai jaise Ali Zafar  aur Aditi Hyder sirf costumes - hairstyles - ghar - aur shehar - badalkar milte hai aur ek imaginary relationship se niraash rehte hai.

Film mein character - ya plot ko lekar koi twist-ya-turn nahi hai aur nahi koi surprise hai -
sivay climax ke - jab hero apne pyaar  ka izhaar karta hai !

Hindi cinema mein shayad pehli baar - kissi hero ne aise dialogue bole hai - aur censor ne pass kiye hai !!

Ali Zafar ka music aur awaaz melodious hai - aur Samir Arya ki cinematography bahtareen.

Aditi - Ali ki jodi refreshing hai magar dono dramatic scenes mein phhikke padte hai.

London New York Paris ko milte hai 2.5**/ stars.

****************************************************************

Aur aakhir mein - iss hafte ki sabse shaandaar film - Paan Singh Tomar.

Abhi kuch mahino pehle - director Tigmanshu Dhulia ne humme bohat hi mazedaar period film di thi - Saheb Biwi aur Gangster.

Ab itne kumm samay mein Tigmanshu UTV ke saath - ek aur path breaking film laaye hai - jo national athlete Paan Singh ke jeevan par adharit hai.

Saheb Biwi aur Ganster ki tarha ye film ka premise, treatment, story telling aur characterization bilkul hi nirala hai.

Kaise ek chotte gaon ka sadharan ladka fauji banta hai - aur kyon ki wo khaneka shaukeen hai - sirf pet bhar khaneke liye - sports mein dakhila leta hai.

Ek acche guru - kudrati stamina aur maan ki lagan se Paan Singh National Games mein daudta hai - lagatar saat saal jitta hai - aur apna hi record todta hai!

Aam taurpe aisi inspirational filmein one dimensional bankar reh jaati hai…

Magar Paan Singh ki kahani - sirf ek honhar athlete ki kahani na hote hue - ek adarshwadi shisya - dilchasp pati - zimmedar baap - dildaar saathi aur khuddar insaan ki kahani hai.

Writer director- apne protagonist ke dwara - humme unke gaon aur pariwar ka parichay karwata hai.

Jab Paan Singh army mein hai to anushasan nibhata hai aur jab sports mein hai to junoon dikhata hai…

Kaise ek national champion baagi banta hai - aur kyon uska dil baar baar tootne ke bawajood - wo aakhir tak haar nahi manta!

Film ka narrative segmented flashbacks mein hai - aur bohat hi interesting hai.

Opening shot se lekar interval tak - film absolutely flawless aur brilliant hai.

Film ka second half - jab Paan Singh dacait banjata hai - predictable ho jata hai.

Samaaj - police - crime - politics aur is case mein - sports mein badhte hue anyay ki baat karti hai.

Abhishek Ray ka sangeet aur Tigmanshu Dhulia ke one line avadhi dialogues - dil ko chu lete hain.

Sainkdo scenes shristi se jude hue hai…

Jab Paan Singh muthi mein reit bhar ke badalte rutu ka elaan karta hai…

Jab wo Fauji hai - shayyar nazar aata hai - aur jab wo Champion hai - aashiq nazar aata hai.

Film mein chotte motte nuqs hai jisse aap maaf kar sakte ho magar Irfaan ke performance mein koi nuqs nahi - aur aap ko Paan Singh se yakinan mohabbat ho jaati hai.

Paan Sigh Tommar ko milte hai 4**** stars.
